🕯️ Ashes of the Sovereign

A Warhammer 40,000 Narrative Campaign

The World of Ardium

On the outer fringes of Ultramar lies Ardium, a world of ancient faith.

In the 27th millennium, long before the Imperium’s rise, the Emperor Himself is said to have walked its surface. In those distant, half-forgotten ages, He is believed to have performed a great miracle, sanctifying Ardium and the domains around it, driving back and warding against unseen evils and consecrating the world for all time. The Emperor raised great structures and installed a custodial population to maintain them, and guard them from harm.

In the centuries that followed, Ardium became a place of quiet but enduring significance. As the Emperor became worshipped, so too was this site declared holy. After the Heresy and His internment upon the Golden Throne, temples were built and the faithful population thrived and prospered. Early emissaries of the Ecclesiarchy arrived to convert the population and identify threats and heretics. But so peaceful and unshaken was this world, that they were welcomed with open arms, already having exalted the Emperor, honouring Him in quiet worship. The Ecclesiarchy’s presence on Ardium is now one of quiet stewardship rather than harsh dominion. Here, faith has never needed to be enforced, only maintained. Now confessors and missionaries from across the Imperium might be blessed with a visit to Ardium. Not to convert or enforce, but to learn and see what a world should be, a model for proper devotion.

The truth of the matter however is much wider. Among certain circles within the Ecclesiarchy and Imperial command, it is remembered that the Emperor’s actions here were not without further purpose. Fragmentary records and preserved oral traditions reveal that great relics have been entrusted to the world, placed within for safekeeping, far from the turmoil of the wider galaxy.

The vast complexes that span Ardium, its temples, sanctuaries, and warded sites are therefore maintained not only as places of worship, but as sites of vigilance, their true significance known only to a select few. Such matters are not spoken of openly. Whether to preserve sanctity, security, or to see such a time that the relics are needed again, few can say.

When Ultramar was later forged, Ardium was counted among its worlds, though it has never known the tight governance of Macragge or Konor. Here, the Ecclesiarchy was allowed to retain unusual authority, expanding the temples and guiding the population in fervent devotion.

For millennia, Ardium endured.

It was a world largely untouched by the great wars that scarred the Imperium. Invasions faltered. Warp storms broke upon its borders and dissipated. Enemies turned aside or vanished without clear cause.

A blessing for the faithful.

The Breaking of Ardium

That blessing has now failed.

A great host of Chaos descended upon Ardium from the warp. The invasion was sudden and devastating, engulfing entire continents in war. Imperial defenders, bolstered by zealous militias and temple guardians, fought desperately to hold the sacred world.

The skies burned.

Massive aerial bombardments and orbital strikes ravaged the surface. Entire regions were reduced to rubble and glass as both sides sought to deny ground to the other. At the height of the conflict, a catastrophic detonation tore through the heart of the warzone. Whether unleashed by the Imperium or their enemies, none can now say. It ripped through the bulk of the Chaos forces, and the invasion was largely repelled.

But Ardium was changed.

The Ashes

Where the fighting was fiercest, a vast crater now scars the world.

Around it, the land has been reduced to ruin—shattered temple complexes, broken earth, and drifting grey dust that settles in unnatural patterns across the battlefield. This substance, now known as the Ashes of the Sovereign, has drawn immediate attention. Those who come into contact with it report… transcendence.

The faithful of Ardium hear the Emperor’s voice more clearly than ever before, filled with a sense of unshakable conviction and righteous clarity. Doubt falls away. Purpose sharpens. Many describe it as a moment of perfect understanding, as though the Emperor’s will is no longer distant, but present and undeniable. The Ecclesiarchy has declared the Ashes a sacred relic, evidence of the Emperor’s ancient blessing, now revealed in its truest form.

This revelation has not gone unnoticed. Word of the Ashes has spread beyond Ardium, drawing new forces to the scarred world. Heretics and servants of Chaos are equally affected, the Ashes igniting a surge of ecstatic power as their patrons’ favour is made manifest in overwhelming sensation and strength. Warbands now return in growing numbers, seeking to claim and corrupt what they believe to be a gift of the warp.

Xenos forces, ever pragmatic, see something different. To them, the Ashes are neither holy nor profane, but valuable. Those who wield them report heightened reflexes, sharpened perception, and an unnatural resilience in battle. Whether as a weapon, a resource, or a commodity, the Ashes have become something worth fighting for.

Across the ruins of Ardium, conflict begins anew.

Call for Battle

Now, Ardium stands on the brink of a second, greater conflict.

Imperial forces move to sanctify the crater and secure the Ashes in the Emperor’s name, raising shrines amid the ruins and declaring the ground itself sacred. Processions of priests, confessors, and soldiers march into the devastated regions, their hymns echoing across broken stone and shattered glass. Yet the Ecclesiarchy does not stand alone in this effort. Adeptus Astartes strike forces, Astra Militarum regiments, and agents of the Inquisition have all turned their attention toward Ardium, each driven by their own purpose. Some seek to protect and contain, others to study and understand, and others still to ensure that no rival faction claims what has been revealed. What was first believed to be a matter of faith has become a matter of strategic importance across the Imperium.

Chaos warbands return in force, drawn by the unmistakable resonance of the Ashes and the devastation left in the wake of the first invasion. To them, this is no sacred relic, but a source of immense and intoxicating power, ripe for corruption and conquest. Rival champions, traitor legions, and daemonic entities converge upon Ardium, each seeking to claim dominion over the crater and bend its influence to their own will. What was once a failed invasion now becomes a renewed crusade of ruin, as the servants of the Dark Gods seek not merely to take the Ashes, but to reshape Ardium itself in their image.

Xenos raiders descend upon the world in growing numbers, drawn by whispers of a resource unlike any other. To them, the Ashes are neither holy nor profane, but something far more practical, valuable, potent, and worth any risk. Mercenaries, scavengers, and warbands from across the void arrive to harvest, exploit, and trade in this newfound substance. Some come to profit, others to experiment, and others still to test their strength against it in battle, caring little for its origin so long as it grants them an advantage.

Across the ruins, battlelines form once more, not in organized fronts but in fractured, shifting conflicts that erupt wherever the Ashes are found. What remains of Ardium’s once-pristine temples now stands broken and exposed, their foundations cracked open to reveal structures long buried beneath the surface. The devastation has torn away the illusion of sanctity, uncovering something older beneath the stone, though few yet recognize its significance.

What was once a place of quiet faith has become a crucible of war, where belief, ambition, and greed collide upon ground that refuses to remain still.

Now the question remains:

Will you come to Ardium and stake your claim,
or be consumed by the fate that awaits those who dare?
